‘Nonsense’ Tamil pop song goes viral
We love reading about weird and wonderful language related stories here at Lingua Translations, and we recently stumbled across one such item about the Tamil language that got us all smiling.
Footage of Tamil actor Dhanush – the son of Indian film actor, media personality and cultural icon Rajinikanth – recording an unusual pop song was uploaded to Youtube by Sony Music India and in six months has garnered no fewer than 55 million views and been shared worldwide across the web.
The wacky tune, which begins with Dhanush crooning ‘Yo boys I am sing song…’, was recorded for a Tamil film called ‘Three’ – the director of which is his wife.
Dhanush told The Times Of India newspaper: “The song is about a guy who has been dumped by the girlfriend.”
“He is drunk and he is singing. But the director wanted the lines to be really funny. I did not know how to write a song about a guy who has just been dumped in a funny way. I did not think. It just came to me.”
The product of this, you ask? A completely hilarious concoction of Tamil/English that is sure to get you chuckling. Here are just some of the highlights:
“Distance-la moonu moonu, Moonu colour white,
White-u background night-u night-u,
Night-u colour-u black-u,
Why this kolaveri kolaveri kolaveri di
White skin-u girl-u girl-u,
Girl-u heart-u black-u
Eyes-u eyes-u meet-u meet-u, My future-u dark-u.”
The original video can be viewed here. We would be interested to know what you think. Is it pure nonsense or a clever promotional tool?
