Marathi translation – a language overview

Marathi belongs to the Indo-Aryan branch of the Indo-European language family, and is spoken by over 71 million people predominantly in the state of Maharashtra in India. It is also spoken in neighbouring states, as well as Israel and Mauritius.

It is one of the 23 official languages of India, and the 14th most spoken language in the world with over 71 million native speakers. Furthermore, Marathi has the fourth largest number of speakers of any language in India.

Dating from around the time of 1000AD, Marathi has some of the oldest literature of all modern Indo-European, Indic languages.

Marathi features two major dialects – Standard Marathi and Warhadi Marathi.

The language is believed to have descended from Maharashtri, which is one of the Prakrit languages which evolved from Sanskrit.

Between the 13th to the mid 20th century, Marathi used the Modi alphabet as its writing system. However, since 1950 it has been written with the Devanāgarī alphabet.
