Luganda translation – a language overview

Luganda, or Ganda as it is commonly called, is a major vernacular language of the Republic of Uganda, a landlocked country in East Africa.

It is spoken by several million Ganda (ethnonym: Baganda, singular Muganda) people, who are an ethnic group native to Buganda, which is a subnational kingdom in Uganda.

There are also many speakers in Southern Uganda, including the capital Kampala.

The language belongs to the Bantu branch of the Niger-Congo language family, and is the most widely spoken Ugandan language. As a second language it follows English (the primary official language of Uganda) and precedes Swahili.
