- About Hebrew
Modern Hebrew is one of the two official languages of Israel, alongside Modern Standard Arabic (MSA). It is the religious language of Judaism, and is used for prayer and study by Jewish communities around the world, but from around 600BC, it started to be replaced by Aramaic. By 200AD, Hebrew had mostly stopped being used in everyday language, although it did continue to be used in literary and religious contexts. In the 19th century, an effort was made to revive Hebrew and restore it as a language for everyday use. One of the main instigators of this was a man called Eliezer Ben-Yehuda.
Hebrew tends to be spoken around the world in places where there are significant Jewish communities. According to the US Census Bureau, the United States is the second largest home to Hebrew speakers after Israel and 220,000 people speak the language fluently.
