Knowing differences amongst cultures can be very useful. Differences in communication styles and values are of great importance when doing business abroad. The mistake many companies make is thinking that knowing cultural differences is enough to thrive in a new market. However, the biggest pitfall is not being able to adapt and adjust one’s behaviour across cultures. It can feel extremely uncomfortable acting against your natural communication style.

The best way to master cross-cultural skills is to practice them in the kind of situations where they will be needed. For that purpose, role-play activities can be very effective. A lack of cultural sensitivity can lead to poor client relationships and poor business results. Being aware of your own values and the people you interact with, as well as, how these impact communication and behaviour, and how you are perceived is essential for anyone working in internationally.

Adapting behaviour across cultures requires patience, practice, and perseverance. Cultural training can help you understand your own values as well as those of other cultures in order to communicate more effectively. You must be able to apply what you have learnt in the performance of your assignments. As well as being able to observe and make the appropriate behavioural adjustments when cross cultural issues get in the way of productivity.
