Use Emotion in Persuasive Speeches

A couple of years ago, my wife and I were shopping for a new car. I remember clearly my response to the salesman who showed us the model we were interested in. It wasn’t, “Gee, that is a fine car!”(for I already knew that before I visited the lot). What I said was, “He’s a really nice guy”… just before I asked my wife, “Did you bring the checkbook?”

And Mrs. Merchant, the 4th grade teacher that I remember so fondly? I can say with certainty that I’ve never mused to myself: “Gosh, I loved the way she folded culture into that unit on South American geography. And her grasp of pre-algebra? Outstanding!”

No, my memories prompt me to think: “That woman changed my life – because she believed in me and showed me what I was capable of.”

In both these situations, my emotional response was what mattered.

It’s the same with the audiences for your speeches and presentations.

Human beings make important decisions because those choices feel right for them. They will justify their decisions with data and logic. But it’s EMOTION that turns people on, and drives the choices in their lives.

Persuasion begins with trust, not with information. Every time you talk to a customer, prospect, colleague, or stakeholder, an unvoiced understanding takes place: you (the speaker) are seeking to influence your listeners. You’re trying to change them in some way–positively and ethically, we hope. Change isn’t easy for anyone. It only occurs when the person to be changed trusts that you are worth listening to and believing in.

5 Steps to Running a Successful Workshop

Henry Brooks Adams said, “A teacher affects eternity – he can never tell where his influence stops.”

A workshop is a life-changing opportunity for everyone. Some attendees may learn nothing but may meet someone important to their future. Some attendees may feel they’ve learned nothing but, years later, that workshop information aids them. No matter what we do to help the learning, it is up to attendees whether they take up the opportunity or not.

So, let’s make it as amazing as possible but not get too upset if some attendees don’t see the value that everyone else did – be a little gentle with yourself. Let’s see what we can do to make it an amazing event, anyway!

1. Preparation

Be there early, set up, make sure you have more than you need for attendees (paper, pens, crayons, seats, desks, food and drink) and make sure all the equipment you need works – overhead projector, data-show, whiteboard pens and duster (eraser), microphone, music, wall posters, your advertising material for your next workshops, your business cards, assessment forms.

2. Welcome

Introduce yourself to every attendee as they come in (or have someone in your team do this) as they’re coming into your space, your “home”. As guests, they’re unsure, fearful even. Start relaxing them before the workshop starts and they’ll participate earlier on. This makes it easier for you… and them!

Start with an ice-breaker (see my article called Running Workshops – Great Ice-Breakers) so they can feel more comfortable with you, the other attendees and the venue.

Be Your Own Audience

Find a mirror and be your own audience. The best way to make sure you are physically and verbally presenting yourself the way you wish to be seen and heard is to actually see and hear yourself.

It is ideal, of course, to video yourself practicing your presentation. But we do not always have access to that equipment when we need to practice.

Find a mirror, and give your presentation. You are your audience.

Your stance and gestures should enhance your message. You want the audience to see that you are confident, friendly and comfortable.

* Are your shoulders relaxed?
* Arms at your sides or slightly in front of you?
* Gestures natural?
* Facial expressions natural?

Eye contact engages people. When you make eye contact with an audience member for a moment while you are speaking, you are including that person in your presentation.

* Are you looking at your audience?

You want your audience to hear every word and feel your enthusiasm.

* Are you speaking at a moderate pace?
* Are you saying your words clearly?
* Are you using natural inflections in the pitch of your voice?

You want your audience to understand what they are hearing.

* Are you using jargon-free language?
* Are you avoiding acronyms and initials?

People get distracted by “um”, “uh”, incorrect grammar, slang expressions, overused phrases. You want your audience to focus on your message, not your mannerisms.

5 Tips to Encourage You to Be Braver in Public Speaking

It is not that easy to keep on your concentration in front of public and control the nuance. In the fact, related to a job, you cannot avoid public speaking. The followings are 5 tips to encourage you to be braver in public speaking:

One of the ways that is often done to handle anxiety problem is by regulating breath. Another way is by talking to other people. Do not worry too much and do not be afraid of misspeaking or doing the stupid things. Just relax because most people will excuse you. So, try to consider the audiences as your close friends that will accept you what looked like.
